Leao’s father reveals he ‘loves being in Italy’ but mentions Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid

The father of Rafael Leao has confirmed that talks are on over the renewal of his son’s contract, though he did mention three other clubs as part of his response.

Now that football has stopped because of the break for the World Cup, speculation has been ramped up regarding the future of some of Milan’s key players and there are arguably none more important than Leao, who was last season’s Serie A MVP and has continued his excellent form.

Antonio Leao – Rafael’s father – gave an interview to the Portuguese newspaper Record in which he spoke about the negotiation with Milan for the renewal of his son’s contract, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“We are working on it. Until the deadline of 2024 we will take care of everything, without necessarily Chelsea, Barcelona or Real Madrid,” he said.

“He loves being in Italy. He has a predilection for Italians, the one the Portuguese do not have for him. He won the award for best player of the last Serie A not because he was beautiful, but simply… because he is the best.”

Based on various reports, it seems that main crux of the negotiations is centred around the compensation owed to Sporting CP jointly with Lille and the request for a big pay rise to reflect Leao’s development since joining.
