Jose Mourinho suffered the heaviest defeat of his 1,008-game management career when Roma were beaten 6-1 by Bodo/Glimt on Thursday – but it was not his only bad loss

Jose Mourinho is in the headlines for the wrong reasons following Roma’s thrashing at the hands of Bodo/Glimt.
Roma were hammered 6-1 by the Norwegian champions on Thursday night in a huge shock in the Europa Conference League.
The match was Mourinho’s 1,008th in management, but it was the first time one of his sides had ever conceded six goals in a game.
In true Mourinho style, he did not hold back in his assessment of the performance.
“Tonight we lost against a team with more quality, it’s as simple as that,” he said. “If I could use the same players every match I would. I expected better, but it’s my responsibility.

“The good thing is that no one will keep asking me why the same players keep playing.”
The result raised questions over Mourinho’s management at his new club – and raised bad memories for the 58-year-old.
It may have been Mourinho’s heaviest ever defeat in a long management career with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham and Roma, but it was far from his first bad result.

Barcelona 5-0 Real Madrid (November 2010)

Before Thursday this was Mourinho’s worst ever loss – and he knew it.
“This is the first time I have ever been beaten 5-0,” he said in the aftermath of Real’s humbling at the Nou Camp.
Mourinho went with an attacking line-up, fielding Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Mesut Ozil and Angel Di Maria, and it backfired massively.
Lionel Messi was at his devastating best, setting up two goals as David Villa scored a brace and Xavi, Pedro and Jeffren all found the net.
The game had a lasting impact on Mourinho, who stuck more closely to his defensive principles from thereon in.
Chelsea 4-0 Manchester United (October 2016)

Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge did not go to plan.
Pedro – that man again – scored 30 seconds into the match which came a year after Chelsea had sacked Mourinho for the second time.
Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante all scored as chants of “You’re not special anymore” rang out from the home fans.
“It is one of those days when you give the advantage to opponents by doing nothing,” Mourinho said.
The stats did not make for happy reading. It was United’s heaviest Premier League defeat since the infamous 6-1 loss against Manchester City five years beforehand.
It was also the first time United had lost a Premier League away match by four or more goals since 1999.
Dinamo Zagreb 3-0 Tottenham (March 2021)

The night started well enough. Spurs held a 2-0 lead from the home leg when they touched down in the Croatian capital.
But it soon unravelled. Mislav Orsic was the man who did the damage, scoring a hat-trick against a Tottenham side which included seven changes from the previous game.
As is par for the course on these occasions, Mourinho openly criticised his players while praising the opponents.
“They left sweat, energy, blood. In the end they left even tears of happiness. Very humble and committed. I have to praise them,” he said.
“On the other side, my team. They didn’t look like they were playing an important match. If for any one of them it is not important, for me it is.”
Middlesbrough 3-0 Chelsea (February 2006)

Another loss built on the back of an early goal. This time it was Fabio Rochemback who scored, after 78 seconds.
Stewart Downing and Yakubu added further goals as Chelsea lost their first game since November.
As usual Mourinho took the defeat with typical good grace.
“When you lose, it is always a bad day, especially when you don’t lose a lot,” he said.
“In my time at Chelsea, this is the third defeat in the Premiership and you can say it was the worst.”
Borussia Dortmund 4-1 Real Madrid (April 2013)

Robert Lewandowski was the architect of this one, scoring all four goals in a thumping Champions League semi-final first-leg victory for Jurgen Klopp’s Dortmund.
Real Madrid nearly overturned it with a 2-0 win in the second leg, but it wasn’t enough to earn a place in the final against Bayern Munich.
“It is obvious that the best team won,” Mourinho said post-match. “On every individual battle on the pitch they were stronger than us, they were more aggressive physically, they were more aggressive mentally so I think they deserve.
”How did it go from 1-1 to 4-1? I really don’t know.”
