Florentino Perez: Maybe the ECA president should be reminded of who Real Madrid are

Florentino Perez has hit out at Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi during Real Madrid‘s General Assembly, one which took place at Valdebebas on Sunday.

The Real Madrid president didn’t hesitate to respond to his PSG counterpart, who has been against the creation of a Super League.

“The Super League format cannot wind up the discussion,” Perez said.

“European justice already questions UEFA’s monopoly on football. The Super League would not be a closed competition, as it would have 25 percent of its places open.

“Recently, the ECA president of said that Real Madrid are afraid of ECA. Maybe we should remind the ECA president who Real Madrid are (applause).

“Competition is in our DNA and the club have a responsibility to protect football as a whole and that means not accepting threats from wherever they come from.

“The Super League is still in the judicial process and it is expected to be resolved in a decision that will mark European football.

“When it is pronounced we will all work together to reverse the situation in football. It must be the result of a debate without pressure, but clubs must be free. Real Madrid’s commitment to football is beyond any doubt.”

Perez went on to hail the Real Madrid players who led the club to their 14th Champions League trophy last season.

“What we have experienced this year at the [Estadio Santiago] Bernabeu will never be forgotten,” Perez added.

“Our players never give up, they are also madridistas and that mix makes us unbeatable. Those matches will remain in the collective memory of Real Madrid fans.

“The conquest of the fourteenth [Champions League title] was against one of the biggest clubs in Europe and I would like to congratulate them.

“Our players are already Real Madrid legends. There are five of them with five Champions League titles and five of them are in UEFA’s Champions League ideal XI. Five of them are also nominated for the Ballon d’Or.”

The Real Madrid president is confident that summer signings Aurelian Tchouameni and Antonio Rudiger will live up to expectations at Los Blancos.

“This year we have brought in Tchouameni, one of the best midfielders in the world and one of the best French players, and Rudiger, one of the best defenders in the world and a central defender who was fundamental to Chelsea winning the Champions League and is also essential for the German national team,” Ancelotti declared.

“They are two great signings who are going to give us a lot of joy.”

Perez also expressed his gratitude towards Marcelo, Casemiro, Gareth Bale and Isco for what they contributed to Real Madrid over the last years before departing in the summer.

“I want to thank [Marcelo],” Perez noted.

“He is the player with the most titles in the history of Real Madrid. He has been one of the best in our history with his magic and fantasy.

“Casemiro arrived at Castilla at the age of 18 and leaves with 18 titles. He was an exemplary player in terms of our values.

“Bale arrived in 2013, was part of Real Madrid for nine years and was fundamental in many of our finals, such as the bicycle kick in Kiev or the infinite run in the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona. Isco has also been a transcendental player in all these years.”
