FC Barcelona – La Liga: Why Pedri turned down Real Madrid: I looked at the badge and something just wasn’t right

Barcelona starlet Pedri opened up about his career so far at Barcelona, mentioning his gratitude to Ronald Koeman for the chance he’s given him and about how he ended up knocking back Real Madrid.

The teenager has taken LaLiga Santander by storm in his first season with the first team and has been called up by Luis Enrique to the senior Spain squad.

When asked whether Leo Messi seemed happier of late, Pedri believes it is not just the Argentine who is in better spirits.

“When results start coming, he’s happier. Like everyone in the squad,” he told Rac1’s radio show ‘Tu diras’.

However, he didn’t feel it was appropriate to discuss Messi‘s future.

“I prefer to not speak to him about that. It’s a decision that he has to make and we’ll enjoy having him while he’s here,” he said.

“Of course, I want him to stay for many years but he has to make the decision, I’m not getting involved.”

Koeman surprised many by throwing Pedri straight in at the deep end this season, but it has paid off and Pedri is delighted with his coach.

“He’s really surprised me because I didn’t expect him to be the way he is. He’s a guy who puts a lot of trust in young players,” he said.

“He gives us tips to get better, and above all, about how to enjoy ourselves on the pitch.

“If you enjoy it, it’ll work out much better.”

Pedri was handed a trial by Real Madrid in the past, but a move never materialised.

“In the first few days I was there, when I put on the kit, I looked at the badge and I knew something wasn’t quite right,” he said.

“In the end, though, I was lucky enough to end up at the club that I want to be at.”
