FC Barcelona – La Liga: The Gibraltar centre-back who stopped Haaland: A reinforcement for Barcelona?

Actualizado

Not many defenders have been able to stop Erling Haaland this season, but Gibraltar national team centre-back Aymen Mouelhi was able to mark the Norwegian well enough to stop him scoring in their World Cup qualifier this week.

Norway still won 3-0, but Mouelhi stood out for the job he did against Haaland.

“Playing against these types of top players, you have to prepare for everything,” the 34-year-old explained on Onda Cero.

“We knew that he and the other striker like space, so we tried not to give him space because he is very very quick and strong.

“You have to be focused, because he doesn’t give you a second. He can make a movement and make you go crazy.

“You have to always be talking with your defensive teammates.

“He is a very good player. I think he is the most dangerous player I have faced. But, I almost expected more from him.”

He was then asked if he’d sign Kylian Mbappe or Haaland if he were in charge of a top club, saying that he’d want to sign both. He did, though, suggest that the Norwegian would fit Real Madrid‘s way of playing better than Barcelona‘s.

Mouelhi – who works in the tourism industry in his day job – then explained that he is a fan of Barcelona and he jokingly offered his services to Ronald Koeman.

“I’ll go to take Gerard Pique‘s place,” he said.

“Speak with Koeman!”
