FC Barcelona – La Liga: Jordi Cruyff on his way to join Laporta’s staff

Jordi Cruyff will soon be announced as Joan Laporta‘s new sporting advisor at Barcelona.

The final details of the deal and the recission of his contract with Chinese club Shenzhen are being wrapped up and Barcelona expect to announce Cruyff‘s return to the club on Thursday.

This move is something that has been in the pipeline for a while, going back to Laporta‘s election campaign. Other candidates, including Victor Font, also sounded out Cruyff, but he listened carefully to what they had to say without committing to any potential president.

As soon as Laporta took over, Cruyff‘s name was again linked with various possible roles in the new Blaugrana structure. Now it is known that he will have a position close to the president and with plenty of influence.

As sporting advisor, the former Barcelona player will be Laporta‘s right-hand man on all football matters. The need for such a figure has long been felt at the Camp Nou.

If Jordi Cruyff‘s arrival as part of the Laporta regime has taken longer than expected it is only due to respect for Shenzhen, where he has been head coach since August 2020. The Chinese club have been understanding of his wish to return to Catalonia, but he has also wanted to do everything by the book.

For Cruyff, a return to Barcelona is a dream come true, as proven by the fact that he is walking away from a much more lucrative contract in China in order to take on his new role. He also feels the timing is right after accumulating experience in a host of non-playing roles in diverse parts of the world.
