FC Barcelona – La Liga: Fiscal agreement the only thing missing in Ousmane Dembele’s contract renewal

In a turn of events that can only be described as dramatic, Ousmane Dembele‘s footballing future will be at the Camp Nou, with only a fiscal agreement missing with regards to a contract extension with Barcelona.

Few expected Dembele to ever make his mark in Catalonia, especially when Ronald Koeman arrived ahead of the 2020/21 season, with a loan to Manchester United having been mooted in the closing hours of the transfer window.

Since then we’ve seen a quite astonishing turnaround in which Dembele has taken full advantage of Ansu Fati‘s injury and become an integral part of Koeman‘s first team.

His current deal is due to expire at the end of next season, however the former Borussia Dortmund star has now been convinced to stay at the club.

Injuries which plagued most of his career in the Spanish top-flight have seemingly disappeared, which has allowed him the opportunity to settle into the team.

Koeman is giving the player a lot of confidence and the switch to a new system provides Dembele with a lot of space to run into, which takes advantage of his qualities.

Barcelona have long wanted to renew his contract, even if for value protection, but it was the French international himself who wasn’t keen on committing his future to Barcelona, especially whilst he was struggling to get into the team.

Had Dembele left on a free transfer it would have represented a monumental failure from Los Cules, given the fact they paid 145 million euros for the player back in 2017.

Much of the negotiation will be over Dembele‘s salary, with the Catalan club wanting to reduce their financial outlay across the board on wages, although given his upturn in form Dembele is likely to want a pay-rise.

According to Sport, Barcelona offered him a three-year extension, although time is of the essence with Barcelona knowing that if this deal isn’t wrapped up by the summer, they will have to push the player out of the club in a sale.
