With Lionel Messi set to sign a two-year contract extension with Barcelona, his former teammate Samuel Eto’o has made clear that Blaugrana president Joan Laporta has an interesting project for the Argentine.
The former Cameroon international is now an ambassador for the Qatar World Cup in 2022, but he found time to review his own career, as well as look towards the future at Barcelona.
“I know that Laporta is preparing an interesting project for Messi,” Eto’o admitted in an interview with La Nacion.
“I can’t imagine Leo wearing another shirt; it’s his club, his home.
“I don’t think his continuity is a question of money, Leo is Barcelona and Barcelona is Messi.”
Sergio Aguero‘s arrival is likely to give Messi some much-needed assistance in attack, and Eto’o believes the pair can add goals.
“Between the two of them they can add 60 goals per season, I only ask that God protects them from injury,” he added.
When asked about what advice he gave to a young Messi, the former Inter forward told how they made each other better.
“He had everything. I felt he should score more goals, he was a very quiet boy, but it makes me happy that in one season he scored 40-45 goals,” Eto’o continued.
“Playing with Messi makes games easier for you, I thank him very much.
“He may have said in the media that I helped him in the beginning, but what he gave us was more than what we could give him. I couldn’t teach him how to play, because he is a God.”
