Rangnick reflects on first win as Man Utd manager

Ajax are reportedly interested in signing Manchester United’s Dean Henderson on loan in January, while the goalkeeper is expected to start in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Henderson, 24, has played just once all season but will have a chance to prove his worth to new boss Ralf Rangnick against Swiss champions Young Boys in the final Champions League group stage match at Old Trafford.

The England international looked as though he may have pipped David de Gea to the No.1 jersey towards the back end of last season after making 13 Premier League appearances, but since then the Spaniard has re-established himself as the clear first choice.

According to Manchester Evening News, Dutch sources have confirmed that the Eredivisie champions are keen to take the highly-rated goalkeeper on loan, should the two parties agree a deal.

Ajax are currently short on goalkeeping options after current No.1 Andre Onana has played just once since January following a doping ban.

The goalkeeper returned to the side for their 2-1 victory over Besiktas in the Champions League last month, but Onana faces an uncertain future at the Johan Cruijff Arena.

Onana, 25, is out of contract in the summer and the club may decide to cash in on the Cameroon international in January, with Inter and Barcelona reportedly interested.

Former Everton and Fulham goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg – who is regarded as the back-up to Onana – is out for the entirety of the season after sustaining a hip-injury back in August.

That means the goalkeeping responsibility has been left to 38-year-old third-choice Remko Pasveer who has played 16 of the club’s 17 matches following his arrival from Vitesse Arnhem in the summer.

Ajax are already confirmed as Group C winners in the Champions League and Henderson would be eligible to play in any of the knockout ties the club feature in.

Former United goalkeeper and now Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar is said to be an admirer of Henderson.

Henderson has made just one appearance for United this season

It is not yet clear what Rangnick’s plans are for Henderson, although the 24-year-old is said to still have plans to establish himself as United’s No.1.

The Rangnick era began on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

Brazilian defensive midfielder Fred won the game for United when his shot with his weaker foot found its way past Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

The win moves United up to sixth in the table, three points adrift of West Ham – who occupy the final Champions League place.

Speaking after the game, Rangnick told Sky Sports: “I’m more than happy. “First of all, most importantly, we won the game. Second, we had a clean sheet, third I think we no doubt deserved to win, because we had control of the game.

“The first half hour was amazing. I felt it was extremely high tempo, high intensity, always on the front. The only thing that was missing in this first half hour was scoring one or two, if not three, goals.

“But it was clear that you cannot play the whole game, 90 minutes, on this kind of intensity level. But, still, even after that we had control of the game. Second half, we started the game well and, in the end, we deserved to win.

“I am more than happy with the clean sheet. Beautiful goal with this weak right foot from Fred. It was about gaining control and we had control most of the time of the game.”
