Dani Alves, football’s most successful player, is a free agent

Nobody has won more in football than Dani Alves. The Brazilian returned home in 2019 after a successful career in Europe, ending his Paris Saint-Germain contract and opting to play for his childhood club, Sao Paulo.

But his two seasons there haven’t ended as he would have hoped and he has now left the club, who owe him three million euros.

Dani Alves became the highest-paid footballer in South America when he joined Sao Paulo, but his salary has not been paid in its entirety, forcing the 38-year-old to lose his patience and refuse to show up for training after the international break.

“We were informed that Dani Alves will not return to Sao Paulo until there has been an adjustment of the financial debt that the club have with the player,” Sao Paulo themselves said. They also explained that they had made an offer to the player that he rejected.

With Dani Alves not having reported for training, the club informed coach Hernan Crespo that the former Barcelona star could no longer be counted on. At 38, Dani Alves is a free agent again.

The Brazilian is now linked with a number of MLS teams, as well as Boca Juniors and River Plate. He could stay in Brazil, though, as he’s aiming to be involved in Tite’s next World Cup squad.

More trophies

On a sporting level, things went well for Dani Alves in Brazil. He was able to add more silverware to his collection, ending the club’s nine-year drought with the Campeonato Paulista. He also scored 10 times and assisted 15 more in 195 appearances.
