MINUTE 94 – ASENSIO SEALS IT FOR MADRID

Benzema breaks forward down the left and lays it on a plate for Asensio, who couldn’t miss from a few yards out. The three points are heading to the capital.

MINUTE 89 – Courtois to the rescue again

Aspas crosses low to Ferreyra who, at the second attempt, fires on goal but Courtois manages to get a strong hand to it.

MINUTE 83 – Celta hit the post!

A freekick from the edge of the box for Celta. Aspas curls it over the wall and it hits the post! Madrid are living dangerously here.

Casemiro got a vital touch on the ball.

MINUTE 77 – Benzema almost has his hat-trick

Benzema cuts inside his marker and fires a shot on goal, but Villar manages to tip it away.

MINUTE 70 – Nacho gets away with one

Nacho commits a foul as Celta break through on goal. It was a rash challenge but the Spaniard only gets a yellow. VAR doesn’t intervene.

MINUTE 61 – Aspas tests Courtois

On the edge of the box, Aspas fires a low strike on goal. Courtois is equal to it with a solid stop.

MINUTE 54 – Mendy tries his luck

Ferland Mendy has found the net a couple of times this season with his weaker right foot so, when the ball fell to him on the edge of the box, the Frenchman tried another curling effort. This time, however, it sailed over the bar.

SECOND HALF

We’re back underway at Balaidos.

HALF TIME – Real Madrid dominate but give Celta hope

It’s been mostly one-way traffic in Real Madrid’s favour, with two well-taken Benzema goals, but a late lapse of concentration has given Celta a route back into the game. A big second half awaits.

MINUTE 43 – Nolito almost levels

A pass across goal so nearly falls perfectly for Nolito, but the forward can only get a toe to it and it goes wide.

MINUTE 40 – MINA HALVES THE DEFICIT

The resulting freekick is directed into the corner by Santi Mina with a fine header. Game on.

MINUTE 39 – Kroos into the book

A cynical pullback on Aspas as Celta are on the attack earns Kroos a yellow

MINUTE 30 – BENZEMA NETS HIS SECOND!

Kroos steals the ball on the edge of the box, and Benzema fires past Villar with his left foot.

MINUTE 26 – Over the bar from just inches out

A ferocious cross from Benzema deflects off a Celta defender and then off the chest of Vinicius. The ball flies over the bar from point blank range but the Brazilian knew little about it.

MINUTE 20 – BENZEMA SCORES!

A patient move that started from Courtois ends with Kroos slipping a cute through ball to Benzema who tucks the ball into the far corner. A great team goal and thoroughly deserved.

MINUTE 15 – Celta’s first break

It’s been all Real Madrid so far, but Celta’s first venture forward almost produced a clear chance. Nolito’s failure to control the ball in the box gets Los Blancos off the hook.

MINUTE 5 – An error almost gives Madrid the lead

Vinicius seizes on a defensive mix up, beating goalkeeper Ivan Villar to a loose ball near the corner of the box. Benzema’s shot is blocked however.

16:15 CET – KICK OFF

The ball is rolling at Balaidos. Can Real Madrid keep up the pressure on Atletico Madrid?

15:50 CET – Real Madrid are warming up

The Real Madrid players are going through their warm-up routine on the Balaidos turf. Just 25 minutes to go before kick off.

15:40 CET – Zidane wary of ‘great opponent’

Celta Vigo are having a solid season, and Zidane feels his side must be at their best to get a result.

“We must not forget what we have done so far, on the contrary. We want to continue doing things well. It will be demanding against a great opponent,” he said in Friday’s press conference.

15:30 CET – Will Aspas break his duck?

In the reverse fixture, Iago Aspas pulled up injured after a fantastic run of goalscoring form with nine goals, but that figure hasn’t changed since then.

In the two and a half months that have passed, he missed one through injury and was suspended for one game, but he is still yet to break his duck in 2021.

15:15 CET – Celta Vigo’s starting XI

15:00 CET – Sergio Ramos will miss the trip

Despite returning to LaLiga action last week, and then scoring in the Champions League on Tuesday, captain Sergio Ramos will sit out the game at Balaidos.

It is nothing for Madrid fans to be worried about however, as Zinedine Zidane is simply leaving him out as a precaution after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
