Barcelona | Transfer Market: Dortmund’s Champions League qualification moves Haaland away from Barcelona

Borussia Dortmund survived quite the scare in the 2020/21 season by officially confirming their place in the Champions League for next season, and with that qualification it is likely that Erling Haaland is further out of reach for Barcelona.

Many clubs across Europe have been positioning themselves for an assault on Dortmund‘s highly gifted squad this summer, with it having been assumed a failure to qualify for the Champions League would result in a fire sale.

Edin Terzic, though, has worked wonders in his role as interim head coach winning both the DFB-Pokal and putting together a run of results which has secured a top-four finish for Dortmund.

Haaland was unwilling to play in the Europa League next term, but that is no longer an issue with Dortmund having qualified for the Champions League.

Furthermore, the added fiscal benefits of securing a place in the tournament are likely to ensure Dortmund aren’t forced to sell any of their most valuable assets, although that doesn’t mean sales won’t occur.

In the hours immediately after securing Champions League qualification, club CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke spoke of his belief that Haaland would now stay with the German giants.

“I’m sure that Haaland will stay,” Watzke confirmed.

It shouldn’t be forgotten that in early April, Mino Raiola and Haaland‘s father did a small tour of both Barcelona and Real Madrid‘s facilities in order to assess the two clubs’ interest in the young forward.

For now, though, it seems as though Barcelona will have to move onto other targets in the form of Sergio Aguero and Memphis Depay, whilst Borussia Dortmund are likely to get another year of goals from Haaland.
