Barcelona: Pedri, improvement in sight

Now that the summer transfer window is over, Barcelona are continuing to plan their squad for the next few seasons.

The sporting directors are working on the search for new players to strengthen the team and to release others that the coach does not want to. But that is not all.

The club are also working on renewing and improving the contracts of some of their players.

And one of them is Pedri Gonzalez. It is true that the player only renewed his contract with the club about a year ago, until 2026.

However, the club’s management are aware that this season they will have to adjust his salary and, probably extend the duration of his deal.

Not among the highest paid

Pedri is currently, along with Lewandowski, the most valuable player in the Barcelona squad. For what he brings on the pitch and also for the potential he has for the future.

He is going to be the main star at Barcelona over the next decade. However, he is far from being the best paid player in the squad.

At the moment he could be the eighth or ninth on the list of earners.

Wage bill

Barcelona are aware of this situation and will be looking to improve his contract. The big problem they are going to face once again is the wage bill of the first team.

The levers have been used to solve the situation during the last transfer window, but the problem will continue to exist for the next two.

Departure of Busquets

It is necessary to let players go in order to create space. It is true that the more than likely departure of Busquets next summer frees up a very significant amount of money.

Barcelona want to find an adequate replacement for the midfielder, and they will have to spend money to do it, but the cost of the signing, together with the salary, will not be as much as what Busquets currently earns.

This could create space to help with the improvement of Pedri‘s contract.

The World Cup in Qatar

And then there is the World Cup. This is a double-edged sword. If the player has a good tournament, which is not unlikely, his price will rise considerably.

So it remains to be seen whether Barcelona will decide to move before Qatar or leave it until after.

What is clear is that there is no fear of the player leaving, Pedri is happy and wants to succeed at Barcelona and the release clause of 1 billion euros is enough to put anyone off making an offer.
