Barcelona: Laporta on Messi return: We’ll see, it’s complicated

As the rumours about a possible Barcelona return for Lionel Messi refuse to go away, club president Joan Laporta has been reluctant to comment on the possibility.

Speaking in Colombia, where he is on a visit as part of the Barcelona’s Foundation’s charity work, he revealed that he has been asked a lot about Messi. However, the Blaugrana president had nothing to report on the matter.

“They’ve been asking me that a lot on the street here in Colombia,” Laporta told Rac1.

“I always say that Messi is a Barcelona fan and that they should relax, he is the best player in the world and we had the good fortune to have him at Barcelona.

“In the future, we’ll see what happens. It’s something very complicated and he’s a Paris Saint-Germain player and we don’t want problems with that club.”

In the course of the interview, Laporta also spoke about the Super League project, something he still believes in, despite popular opposition from fans.

“There’s a one-billion-euro bonus that the founding clubs will share in the first year,” said Laporta.

“If we win the competition, we’d get another 350 million euros and that sum is much higher than what you get for winning the Champions League.

“It is a competition with enormous potential. The European Tribunal will give their verdict in March and I hope they side with us.”

Meanwhile, Laporta also insisted that the club are not concerned with Ousmane Dembele‘s contract situation.

After the saga over his renewal earlier this year, the French winger only signed on until 2024, meaning the club would like to extend that before entering the final year again.

“We’re not too busy on that front. Ousmane is happy,” commented Laporta.

“Now we’re in the negative in terms of Financial Fair Play and we have to make it up.

“Starting with dialogue, we’ll find a solution.”
