Victor Lindelof’s David de Gea comments show much has changed since Roy Keane fight claim

Goalkeeper De Gea is the only ever-present member of Manchester United’s squad this season, having reclaimed his starting spot after losing it to Dean Henderson last term

There were times last season when David de Gea’s Manchester United future looked far from secure, but the Spaniard has turned things around since the summer.

The 31-year-old has not been free from mistakes this term, not least in the Manchester Derby defeat, but has played every single minute in the league and Champions League with Dean Henderson restricted to just 90 minutes of competitive action in the Carabao Cup.

Centre-back Victor Lindelof has sung the praises of his goalkeeper, who has made some big contributions to keep United in top-four contention even before the arrival of interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

It marks a significant change compared to some of the comments being made about De Gea as recently as 2020, with Roy Keane among those whose assertions feel a world away.

“He’s been absolutely world class and, in my opinion, he’s the best in the world and he’s been showing that this season,” Lindelof told Manchester Unitedclub media after the weekend victory over Crystal Palace.

The result saw De Gea earn his fourth clean sheet of the season, and ensured United ended the weekend in sixth spot thanks to Arsenal’s defeat at Everton on Monday night.

“I’m very pleased for him and we have a very good relationship, on and off the pitch, so I’m very happy for him,” the former Benfica defender continued, revealing the pair communicate with one another in Spanish and Portuguese.

“You know he is always behind you and if there’s a mistake or they [the opposition] get through, then he’s always there to protect you and that’s always nice to know that David has your back.”

The comments from Lindelof represent a stark contrast to what many were saying in 2020, with former United captain Roy Keane giving one of the more dramatic assessments of De Gea’s form.

“I’m sick to death of this goalkeeper,” Keane said at half-time during a 1-1 draw with Tottenham, after De Gea failed to keep out Steven Bergwijn’s opener for the London side.

“I would be fighting him at half-time, there is no getting away from that, I would be swinging punches at that guy. I am flabbergasted.”

Lindelof emphasised the importance of communication between him and De Gea, as United aim to put their defensive issues behind them under their new manager.

The Red Devils have conceded three goals in three league games under Rangnick and previous caretaker manager Michael Carrick, compared to 21 in 12 outings with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in charge.

“[De Gea’s] reactions and everything are phenomenal, everything about his game, with the ball at his feet, he’s very good,” Lindelof said.
