Arsenal’ s poor performance against Newcastle on Monday may have just handed Tottenham a Champions League spot, and their rival’s Twitter activity after the game has rubbed salt in the wound.

Tottenham’s official Twitter account liked Arsenal’s tweet confirming defeat away to Newcastle, and this was picked up by fans before it was quickly removed. The admin team at Tottenham were on form as their north London rivals deteriorated, and they even tweeted about a look ahead to their clash against Norwich on Sunday.

With the game still days away, it was an uncharacteristic time to share a preview post, but it was conveniently posted just one minute after Arsenal lost. And Tottenham only need a point on Sunday to confirm their top four place, as Arsenal may have blown it.

The task was relatively simple for Arsenal, win the match and a Champions League place remains in their hands on the final day. But, unfortunately for them, Newcastle had other ideas as they put on a show for the crowd on their final home game of the season.

The Magpies pressed hard and looked like the better team all night, and a Ben White own goal put the hosts ahead before Mikel Arteta decided to go all-out attack. Attacking reinforcements were brought on for defenders with Arsenal desperately looking to turn it around, but they remained open at the back and Bruno Guimaraes took full advantage.

The game ended 2-0, and it looked as though Arsenal had lost a cup final. And to make matters worse, Tottenham’s official account liked their tweet which confirmed defeat, as their north London rivals celebrated their collapse.

Arsenal’s only hope now is that they beat Everton on the final day, and Norwich pull off a surprise upset and beat Tottenham at Carrow Road. But with the Canaries already relegated after picking up five wins all season, their chances are slim.

Arteta remained somewhat optimistic in his post-match interview that Norwich could bag a win, but he was bitterly disappointed with his Arsenal side for their display against Newcastle. “A lot has happened to the squad with injuries that we’ve picked up,” Arteta said.

“It was in our hands, now it’s not, we have to beat Everton and hope for Norwich to beat Spurs and we have to wait now. There’s always a chance in football and you have to be there just in case.

“It’s extremely disappointing that Newcastle worked 10 times harder than us and won the match. The performance is nowhere near we have to play if we want to play in the Champions League.

“I am incredibly disappointed, I don’t know if I’m stunned. When you look at the team we had in the moment there is a lot of question marks a lot of positions with the injuries and suspensions we had. It’s not an excuse, tonight we were not at the races.

“It’s not about 100 per cent, it’s about when you jumps on the pitch you cannot use this excuse. It’s the players we have, it’s the way we’ve been playing in the last few weeks, we have to get through that, today we wasn’t good enough”
