Thierry Henry hoping to push Arsenal into transfer after damning Mikel Arteta verdict

Thierry Henry has ‘put in a good word’ for Anderlecht midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga to join Arsenal, according to reports.

Mikel Arteta is set to be in the market for a midfielder with suggestions Granit Xhaka could be on his way out.

Yves Bissouma is understood to be on the Gunners’ radar, but there are a number of clubs chasing the Brighton ace.

Lokonga is another name that has been linked with a move to north London and would provide a cheaper alternative to Bissouma.

Voetbal 24 claim that Henry, who has re-joined Roberto Martinez’s international setup, is hopeful of pushing Arsenal bosses to sign the 21-year-old.

Henry has been highly critical of Arteta’s squad at The Emirates, claiming that currently, they ‘are nowhere near’ being able to challenge for the title.

“I don’t like to compare eras, people do and I understand that, it’s a different generation, a different time, different technology, they have different views of the game, different preparations and different ways,” he explained to beIN Sports.

“The team hasn’t been successful recently, obviously winning cups along the way, but nowhere near the level of trying to compete for the title.

“But you can say the same for a lot of teams. You see Liverpool wait 30 years to win the title, it takes time, even for great teams.

“So hopefully Arsenal can come back and compete, because at the end of the day there’s only going to be one winner, but at least try and compete.”

Should Lokonga go for good money, it would also help Anderlecht boss Vincent Kompany who is hoping to do his own business in the market.

The midfielder has two years remaining on his current deal and there is a belief a deal could be done in the region of £13million.

The player himself has admitted he would be open to moving on, but only if it is to a club at a higher level than he currently finds himself at.

“I will not go to a club which is inferior to Anderlecht, nor to a club of the same level. I will only leave Anderlecht if all the ingredients are there,” Lokonga said last month.

“Yes, I feel ready to take a step forward and to rub shoulders with great players. But everything will depend on the proposals that will be made during this summer.”

Meanwhile, Football.London claim that Arteta and Edu have made a move for Norwich City midfielder Emi Buendia.

The Argentinian has been heavily linked with a move to north London and it is now believed that the Gunners have formally registered their interest with a £30million bid.

That bid is likely to fall short of the Canaries’ £40m valuation, although the player’s desire to move to a bigger club is expected to play a factor.

Elsewhere, Ajax keeper Andre Onana is believed to be on their wishlist as they look for a more experienced back-up to Bernd Leno.
