Surprise transfer route opens up for Sergio Aguero with Man City stars playing a role

Sergio Aguero’s Manchester City teammates are reportedly pushing for him to move to Benfica this summer after the Portuguese club made contact over a free transfer.

The Argentine striker has many suitors vying for his services after City confirmed he will leave the Etihad when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona are believed to be interested, with the Catalan club keen to reunite Aguero with compatriot Lionel Messi.

But Benfica have emerged as a surprise destination for the 32-year-old and are working on the details of a lucrative contract to lure him to the Primeira Liga.

That’s according to Portuguese publication Record , which claims Aguero’s teammates Joao Cancelo and Ruben Dias have been trying to persuade him to move to the Lisbon club.

Cancelo came through the academy ranks at Benfica, while City paid a club-record £65million to prise Dias from Estadio da Luz last summer.

The report adds former Argentina internationals Javier Saviola and Pablo Aimar – both of whom played for Benfica – will add their voices to try and convince Aguero to move to their former club.

Benfica are understood to be preparing a three-year contract for Aguero worth €12million (£10.2m), which includes a signing-on bonus.

Meanwhile, Aguero has not commented on where he might end up this summer but outlined his desire to continue playing at the highest possible level.

“A new stage with new challenges will begin, and I am fully ready to face them with the same passion and professionalism that I have always dedicated to continue competing at the highest level,” he said.

A number of Premier League clubs have also been linked with the soon-to-be free agent.

Aguero previously spoke very highly of Chelsea while he was still an emerging talent at Atletico Madrid.

Elsewhere, a move to Arsenal would see him join forces with former City assistant manager Mikel Arteta, who discussed a possible swoop in his press conference on Thursday.
