A miserable run of seven Premier League defeats in their last ten matches has put the Spaniard under enormous pressure on Merseyside.

Ever since Benitez replaced Carlo Ancelotti, who departed the club suddenly to return to Real Madrid, he has not been a popular presence in the Blues’ dugout.

His previous history of managing Liverpool, as well as labelling Everton a “small club” during his time at Anfield, meant he was never a popular candidate to take over the reins at Goodison Park.

And Benitez has risked the wrath of the Everton faithful once more, by drawing attention to the club’s shortcomings over the last few campaigns.

“I don’t know if you’re an Everton fan, but which is the feeling of the last years for Everton fans? Success, or frustration?,” Benitez boldly asked during his press conference.

“You know the answer, I have a lot of friends who are telling me the same.

“The problems are not just something you can fix in five months, they know you need time and they know we are going in the right direction.

“One thing is what you can see on the pitch every weekend. The fans at the beginning could see what we were looking for – the intensity, the commitment, the way we were playing.

“Everybody was delighted, then after the frustration of some years they could see we were going in the right direction.”

Everton have not won a major trophy since their FA Cup triumph in the 1994-95 season.

They have also failed to qualify for European competitions for the last three seasons, and their last major final.

Unfortunately, those trophy-less runs are showing no signs of ending, as the club are currently languishing in 14 th position.

Their 2-1 victory against Arsenal on December 6 is their only victory in their last ten matches.

Despite the huge backlash greeting his arrival, Benitez’s reign did begin rather impressively with four victories in their opening six league matches.

Everton have reportedly made contact with Derby County manager Wayne Rooney

However, their form, along with their league position, has no-dived ever since, prompting huge speculation suggesting his job is in peril.

Reports from the Sun have also claimed the Toffees have made contact with former star and current Derby County manager Wayne Rooney.

But despite the speculation surrounding the former Manchester United and England superstar, Benitez is confident he still retains the confidence of the board.

“To be fair, I was talking with Mr Moshiri this morning. I have meetings with the chairman, with Denise, I have conversations with them and they are supporting me,” Benitez said assuredly.

“They know…I will say something I’ve said before.

“They have experience changing managers, they have experience trying to adapt things and it was not working.”

Everton face the ominous prospect of a trip to Stamford Bride to face Chelsea.

While Thomas Tuchel’s side have experienced a marginal dip in form in recent weeks, they got back to winning ways with a 3-2 home victory against Leeds United.
