Mikel Arteta insists Lucas Torreira must be patient and remain calm after the midfielder issued an emotional request to leave Arsenal this summer.
Torreira, 25, is currently on loan at Atletico Madrid after falling out of favour at the Emirates last season.
He has struggled for game time in the Spanish capital and made no secret of his desire to join Boca Juniors – the club he grew up supporting – in a recent interview.
The Uruguayan’s desire to be closer to his family in South America was compounded by the tragic passing of his mother after she contracted coronavirus.
This prompted a moving appeal by his father, who begged Arsenal chiefs to let Torreira join Argentine giants Boca.
But Arteta has urged all parties to remain “tranquilo” – meaning calm – as the situation cannot be resolved at present.
“We have contacted him, we have spoken to him we know how much of a difficult time this is for him,” said the Spaniard.
“He was really attached to his Mum and with his family and it’s a hard time for him emotionally.
Did Arteta make a mistake by sending Torreira out on loan this season? Have your say in the comments.
“There is a lot of thoughts and things that goes through his mind but… ‘tranquilo’ when things are like that it is not the moment to make decisions.
“I understand how he’s feeling emotionally his need and responsibility to be closer to his family but this is not the moment to make any decision.
“Certainly it’s a decision that will have to be made by different parties and now nothing is going to change.”
Arteta believes Torreira – who joined from Sampdoria for £25million in 2018 – is one of many players who have struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League.
He added: “Players often go through different stages in their careers and emotional moments and these things happen.
“We have to deal with that and when you recruit a player from a foreign country they have that struggle sometimes to adapt to a new culture a new language a new way of doing things. The risk is there.”
