Manchester United know there is a lot they must improve on in order to catch Manchester City next season.
Pep Guardiola’s side were confirmed as Premier League champions on Tuesday evening as United suffered a home defeat at the hands of Leicester City.
This result means the Sky Blues have reclaimed the title with three matches to spare.
There were moments in this campaign whereby Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men appeared to be in with a shout of top spot, but those hopes slowly faded from February onwards.
It’s clear that the Red Devils will need to get their recruitment right this summer in order to mount an effective title charge- but who could they sign to make this possible?
We have taken a look at the latest players linked with a move to Old Trafford…
Atletico braced for Llorente bid
Atletico Madrid have sped up contract talks with midfielder Marcos Llorente amid growing interest from United.
It’s understood that the Red Devils are preparing a £68m bid for the 26-year-old, with the Spanish club concerned by this development.
Although his current deal does not expire until 2024, Atletico ‘intensified’ conversations for a renewal in recent weeks after hearing of transfer links.
Atletico’s CEO Miguel Angel Gil is personally handling Llorente’s renewal negotiations and he has already met the player’s agent several times in recent weeks, according to a report from Spanish publication AS.
Red Devils keen on Maitland-Niles
United are weighing up a surprise swoop for Arsenal defender Ainsley Maitland-Niles, according to the Daily Mail.
The 23-year-old has spent the second half of the season on loan at West Bromwich Albion.
Despite predominantly featuring in midfield for the Baggies, Maitland-Niles can also operate at full-back.
It’s expected that the Arsenal academy graduate would serve as a back-up option for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Bissouma backed to make United move
Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright believes Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma would pick a move to Old Trafford ahead Anfield, if deciding between United and Liverpool.
The Times recently revealed that the Malian midfielder has requested to leave Brighton this summer, which has alerted some of the Premier League’s top teams.
Liverpool are said to be among those interested in striking a deal, though Wright has insisted that the 24-year-old would be better off joining Solskjaer’s side.
“You look at Bissouma and Bissouma is looking at Liverpool, and we know that Liverpool have had their problems this season,” he said when speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast.
“If you’ve got to choose between Liverpool and Man United in the current climate, I’m probably going to go with Man United.
“You think to yourself, yeah Liverpool magnificent what they have done the last couple of years. But you look at Man United and what Man United are on the cusp of doing, and it’s a much more attractive proposition right now.”
