John Terry tipped for Championship job and warned not to repeat Frank Lampard mistake

John Terry has been linked with a managerial move into the Championship after his decision to quit as Aston Villa number two.

But he has been warned to take heed of his old pal Frank Lampard’s career move.

Terry, 40, left his post as Villa assistant on Monday. In a statement he said the decision was being taken with the ultimate “objective of becoming a manager”. He was quickly linked with the vacancy at Swansea City.

Former England and Arsenal star-turned-pundit Ray Parlour believes Terry can be a success in the dugout, just like his old Chelsea teammate Frank Lampard.

But Parlour says Terry would do well to avoid Lampard’s mistake of taking too much on, too soon. Lampard cut his managerial teeth at Derby but left after just one season when Chelsea came calling.

Despite his legendary status as a player at Stamford Bridge, he lasted just 18 months in the hotseat. Parlour believes Terry would do well to take heed from that example as he plots a managerial path of his own.

Parlour told talkSPORT : “It would have to be somewhere with ambition – you’ve always got to be backed from the board.

“It needs to be a club that wants to go forward, wants to build and an owner to say, ‘we’ll back you’.

John Terry is looking to get into management

“Sometimes it won’t work out for managers, but if it does then John Terry, with all his experience and medals he’s won during his career, it could be brilliant.

“When Frank went from Derby to Chelsea, it was too hard to turn down because he is Chelsea and an absolute legend there. He had to make that move.

“But would he have done better with a year or two more in the Championship?

Frank Lampard lasted just 18 months in the Chelsea job

“Just to learn a little bit more about the game because you’re with different players, a bit more experienced players in the Premier League who have bigger egos.

“So it’s how to handle those guys as well, but John will look at every situation.

“If a Championship club comes up and have lots of ambition to get to the Premier League, he’d definitely take it.”
