Arsenal are in danger of facing another Mesut Ozil situation with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Jamie Carragher has warned.
The Gunners frontman has been unable to produce regularly this season having penned a new deal in the summer.
Arsenal fought hard to convince their star striker that his future lied at the Emirates.
Aubameyang signed a lucrative new deal, but his drop off in performances since has drawn concerning comparisons with Ozil.
The German became something of a burden in his final years at Arsenal with his displays not matching up to his mammoth wages.
And Carragher is worried that Aubameyang is now failing to justify his status.
He wrote in the Telegraph : “Through the latter years of Arsène Wenger, into the reign of Unai Emery and now Arteta, there has been a massive erosion of trust in those who are supposed to be leading by example.
“We saw that with Mesut Özil, who Arteta eventually eased out of the club.
“Now it looks like history is repeating itself with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
“It is easy to apply retrospective wisdom when looking at the lucrative contract given to Aubameyang and say it was an expensive mistake. It wasn’t at the time.”
Mikel Arteta has been prepared to drop the forward as he continues to rebuild his Arsenal squad.
Carragher believes the Spaniard is in something of a lose-lose scenario however as he juggles the team’s needs with maximising their investment in the striker.
He added: “Unless Aubameyang constantly steps up as he did when creating Nicolas Pépé’s goal on Thursday night, Arteta has the same problem as he faced with Özil last summer, with a well paid underperformer absorbing massive wages.
“The more he plays him when he is producing nothing, the more it impedes the rebuilding process, while leaving him out risks other problems.
“There was a circus around Özil in his final months with fans divided between whether the problem was him or the coaches who did not know how to get the best from his talent.”
