David Ginola has claimed Harry Kane has to leave Tottenham to win trophies – and could make a “surprise” move to another London club.
Kane gave a fresh hint he will seek a transfer this summer after getting named as the Premier League Player of the Year at the London Football Awards and then declaring: “I would rather be winning team trophies than this one.”
Spurs lost Sunday’s Carabao Cup final and sit in seventh place in the Premier League after the sacking of Jose Mourinho. Tottenham have already missed out on top target Julian Nagelsmann while Kane, 27 has yet to win a team trophy in his career.
And former fan favourite Ginola said: “Is he leaving? “I think unfortunately he has to because his club haven’t provided for a player like him the sort of things he was expecting from the club, like potentially winning trophies.
“I think he’s looking at his career now and over the last few years it has been good for him, but not really for the club.
“Even though they’ve competed in the Champions League final, I’m pretty sure he wants to play for a team that will challenge for any title in any country.
“Time goes by and you see that a football career is very short and he can’t wait anymore. He can’t wait for words for Daniel Levy to say: “OK, we are going to build something’. But you have been able to build things in the past. You tried, you did, Pochettino was accused of not winning anything. He left for Paris. You had Jose Mourinho. It is not for him stability in the way that clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid winning trophies every year. It is a completely different world. Harry Kane is looking for a club who will give you this sort of opportunities especially at the biggest stages.”
Kane is under contract until 2024 and would cost at least £150m although Spurs would fight any sale. The price is out of reach for all but a handful of clubs in the Premier League – Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea.
“I think it will be a decision made with his family and it will probably be a surprise at the end with his choice,” Ginola told talkSPORT.
“I am not talking abroad. Maybe he will take an opportunity to play in a club without going too far away from London and obviously that would be a London club.
“That would be a big surprise for me, honestly, because as when you play for Spurs it’s a London club so you’re not going to Arsenal. You are not going to other clubs. But, having said that, football is a different world now and player’s decisions are completely unexpected.”
