Gary Lineker has apologised to Alan Shearer for poking fun of him ahead of Chelsea’s FA Cup win over Manchester City.
Lineker was presenting on BBC Sport alongside Shearer, Ashley Cole, and Micah Richards when he brought attention to the fact that the former Newcastle and Blackburn star never won the world’s oldest cup competition.
Talking to Cole at Wembley stadiums on Saturday, Lineker said: “Before we get your thoughts on Chelsea, it’s worth reminding people of your FA Cup pedigree.
“You have won this competition so many times you’re actually joined fifth on the all-time list of winners.”
It was at this point that a graphic appeared on the screen showing Cole placed above the likes of Man City and behind only Arsenal, Man United, Chelsea, and Tottenham.
For comic effect, Shearer is named at the bottom of the list next to the number zero.
Lineker continued: “That’s one more than Manchester City, also one more than Newcastle – whose six wins, of course, don’t feature Alan Shearer. He’s down the list there right at the bottom.”
Laughing at the list, Shearer responded: “How long did it take you to do that graphic, Gary?”
To which Lineker, also laughing, replied: “A special request that was, a special request.”
Lineker continued: “Ashley, Seven wins though that’s absurd. Outrageous.”
Shearer then interrupted: “That’s not fair! Give me one will you?”

Finally, Cole said: “It’s that boyhood dream to come to these amazing stadiums and pick up, for me, the most famous trophy in the world, Al? And yeah, I have been lucky enough to win seven, so it’s brilliant.”
Chelsea beat Man City 1-0 in the FA Cup semi-final with Hakim Ziyech scoring the only goal of the contest ten minutes into the second half of a game the blues largely dominated.
After the match, Lineker took to Twitter to apologise to Shearer. He tweeted: “Sorry”, alongside the laughing emoji.
