Chelsea transfer round-up: Blues step up Ben White pursuit as Leonardo Spinazzola contacted


With Chelsea targeting a challenge for the Premier League title next season, Thomas Tuchel’s squad requires reinforcements to match those lofty ambitions.

The Blues were the Premier League ’s highest spenders last summer, but with several of those moves failing to pay off, more funding will be required.

Tuchel has identified several areas of his squad that require new signings, including in central midfield, fullback and striker.

The Stamford Bridge side have already seen Victor Moses depart on a permanent transfer to Spartak Moscow, but are yet to make a signing themselves.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia has reportedly made contact with Leonardo Spinazzola after the fullback ruptured his Achilles tendon during Italy’s win over Belgium at Euro 2020.

Spinazzola has been one of the breakout stars of the tournament, starting al but one of the Azzurri’s games.

But his summer came to an early end on Friday night when he suffered the significant injury to his leg with 11 minutes to go.

The Blues have been linked with a move for the Italian after his impressive performances, with Thomas Tuchel keen to upgrade his options at fullback.

Granovskaia appears to be laying the groundwork for a move, with Sky Italia reporting she sent a personal message to the 28-year-old to wish him a swift recovery.

But any transfer deal will have to wait until at least January, with the injury set to keep him sidelined for at least four months.

After earning a call-up to the England squad for Euro 2020, Ben White is a man in high demand, with Chelsea stepping up their efforts to sign the centre-back.

White has impressed for Brighton, with Arsenal appearing to be the frontrunners to sign him having already seen a £40million bid rejected.

Everton and Manchester City are also keen on signing the 23-year-old, who has become a key player under Graham Potter for the Seagulls.

But Duncan Castles has now stated that Chelsea have contacted the England international and are set to provide “significant competition” to the Gunners.

“I now understand that Chelsea have notified the player of their interest in signing him. I think that’s significant competition for Arsenal,” Castles told Reach PLC’s Transfer Window podcast.

“Chelsea can offer Champions League football, can offer a club based in London in the same way that Arsenal can, but one that should be immediately competitive for the Premier League title.”

Declan Rice has long been a target of Chelsea’s, interest that originally began under former boss Frank Lampard, but has continued with Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel has made central midfield one of the Blues’ priority areas for the summer transfer window, with Rice believed to be high on their wishlist.

The England international is reported to have recently rejected a number of contract offers from West Ham, but the Hammers will still demand a substantial fee for their captain.

That means the Blues could be forced to explore alternative options if a deal for Rice proves to be too expensive to complete.

According to the Daily Express, one name that is rising up their shopping list is Aurelien Tchouameni.

The 21-year-old is said to have drawn the attention of Chelsea after his performances for Ligue 1 side AS Monaco.
