Bruno Fernandes scored United’s first goal but it was his Portuguese compatriot who stole the headlines as new manager Ralf Rangnick watched on from the stands.

After the game, Fernandes was asked about Ronaldo’s achievement – and was quick to praise the magnitude of his milestone.

And he predicted there will be plenty more goals to come from the 36-year-old for the Red Devils.

“He wants to be the best, and that’s what you want in your team.”

Asked if being dropped against Chelsea at the weekend motivated Ronaldo, Fernandes said: “He doesn’t need that.

How did you rate the Manchester United players against Arsenal?

After the game, caretaker manager Michael Carrick announced he would be leaving the club before Rangnick takes charge ahead of the weekend.

Carrick said on Amazon: “It’s not been an easy one [decision] to make but I think it’s the right one.

“I wanted to take some time off after I played and I promised my family and it never happened. I have thrown myself into work here for so long and it feels like the right time to step away. I will be back around the place though.”
