Barcelona vs Real Madrid: Looking back at Ancelotti’s Clasico record

Carlo Ancelotti has pretty much seen it all in football, but not much will compare to the feeling of playing in what many consider the biggest fixture in club football – El Clasico.

This Sunday will be the Italian coach’s sixth Clasico, although the first time he faced Barcelona was in 2004 when his Milan side won narrowly in Italy. Barcelona got their revenge two years later in the Champions League semi-finals, on their way to defeating Arsenal in the final.

Ancelotti’s two wins and three defeats

Ancelotti’s record in this fixture isn’t much to write home about, with two victories and three losses.

One of those wins did produce silverware, however, when his Real Madrid side defeated their eternal rivals in the final of the 2014 Copa del Rey – the game in which Gareth Bale went on that famous run past Marc Bartra down the left flank of Mestalla to score the winning goal.

His first two league Clasicos both came in the 2013/14 season and ended in defeat. The first came at the Camp Nou when goals from Neymar and Alexis Sanchez gave the hosts a 2-1 win, with Jese netting a consolation late on. A Lionel Messi hat-trick sealed a dramatic 4-3 win for Barcelona at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in his second match against the Azulgrana, after Andres Iniesta opened the scoring and Benzema scored a brace and Cristiano Ronaldo scored one to reply for the home side.

This result saw Los Blancos lose top spot in LaLiga Santander to Atletico Madrid, who would go on to be crowned champions that season.

A short-lived victory

Ancelotti’s second Clasico win came in the 2014/15 season as his side defeated Barcelona 3-1 at home as an early strike from Neymar was cancelled out by goals from Ronaldo, Pepe and Karim Benzema.

Yet Real Madrid fell apart towards the end of the season and lost the second Clasico after goals from Jeremy Mathieu and Luis Suarez all but sealed the LaLiga Santander title for Barcelona, who went on to also win the Copa del Rey as well as the Champions League that year.
