Arsenal’s transfer failings laid bare by shambolic stat surrounding first-team signings

Arsenal’s transfer failings in the market have been laid out bare after a remarkable stat came to light.

The Gunners have had a tough few years in the Premier League, with this season being one of their worst.

Mikel Arteta, who won the FA Cup in his first six months in charge, has overseen a dramatic downturn in form.

It has seen the north London club finish eighth in the Premier League and puts an end to a consecutive run of 25 years in European competition.

The Spaniard is desperate to bring in his own players in the transfer market but finding the cash has proved problematic.

Mikel Arteta has had a tough season at Arsenal

One area that could have helped their funds was through player sales – but this has been painfully poor in recent years.

Excluding free agents, Arsenal have signed 30 players since 2013 but have never made a profit on a single one of them.

The last player to sign and be sold on for more money than they paid for was Olivier Giroud, who was originally brought in 2012.

The Frenchman joined London rivals Chelsea in a deal worth £18m, double the amount Arsenal forked out.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was also one of the last players to be sold for a profit when he joined Liverpool for £35m – a £20m sale up from the £15m spent in 2011 from Southampton.

But that is as far as it goes with the likes of Lucas Perez, Gabriel Paulista and Lukas Podolski all departing for pennies.

Granit Xhaka appears to be the latest, who signed from Borussia Monchengladbach for £40m in 2016.

The Swiss international is on the brink of a £17m transfer to Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma – less than half what they paid five years ago.

Admittedly, the midfielder has two years left on his contract and is now 29 – so a large fee was probably always out of the question.

But the rush to see him leave without negotiating a higher price is astonishing and it is not the first time this has happened in recent history at the Emirates.
