Arsenal statement appears to confirm Martin Odegaard’s future amid transfer uncertainty

Martin Odegaard’s loan spell at Arsenal has been one of the more successful ones in the club’s recent history, delivering a number of stellar performances to endear himself to the Gunners faithful.

However, amid so much uncertainty back at parent club Real Madrid with a change in manager, Odegaard’s future looks to be away from Arsenal after the club revealed a list of all the players that have been released following the conclusion of the Premier League season.

A number of names were on the list, including back-up goalkeeper Mat Ryan, central defender David Luiz and fellow Real Madrid loanee Dani Ceballos, but most notably, Odegaard’s name featured.

Though it may not come as a surprise given Odegaard was always on loan anyway, talk of a deal to keep him at the Emirates on a permanent basis has been rife.

Arsenal’s post read: “Our thanks and best wishes go to the following players across our teams whose contracts officially end with us on June 30, 2021.

“All developments regarding players extending their contracts; joining/re-joining us; or leaving us will be officially communicated as soon as they are confirmed.

“We thank all the above players for their contributions to the club during the periods of their permanent or loan contracts with us.

“You will always be part of the Arsenal family and we wish you all the best of health, happiness and success in your futures.”

Though the second paragraph may provide optimism to some, Arsenal’s statement very much had overall tones of a ‘goodbye’ rather than a ‘see you soon’.

Should Arsenal try and keep Martin Odegaard? Have your say in the comments below.

Odegaard went where the likes of Dani Ceballos and Denis Suarez failed as he mustered up meaningful contributions to the Gunners despite only plying his trade there temporarily.

His fierce strike against Olympiacos in the Europa League proved crucial as Arsenal reached the final four of the competition before he went one better and bagged a goal against fierce local rivals Tottenham Hotspur in March’s derby day victory.

Odegaard has been in the limelight of European football since he made headlines by featuring in men’s football at the age of 15, but if Arsenal do wish to keep him, they make take a faint glimmer of hope from old comments made by newly-appointed Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti that have resurfaced.

“When Florentino buys a Norwegian footballer, you simply have to accept it,” he claimed. “Furthermore, the president decided that he would play three games with the first team as a public relations exercise.

“He could be the best player in the world, but I don’t care because he was not a player who I asked for. That signing was to do with PR.”

Hardly the comments of someone who is desperate to keep Odegaard at the Santiago Bernabeu.
