Arsenal are set for another summer transfer saga with Granit Xhaka as links with a move to Roma have resurfaced.

The Italians were on the verge of signing the Swiss international last summer until a deal fell through.

It appeared Xhaka was destined to leave the Emirates who has been up and down during his time in north London.

But the midfielder would not only stay put for the upcoming season, but he was handed a contract extension.

football.london claims that Roma are looking to reignite their interest in Xhaka at the end of the season, however.

There has been no fresh contact between the Serie A club and the player, but Xhaka is open to a move to the Stadio Olimpico if an agreement can be reached.

Jose Mourino is a long-term admirer of Xhaka and believes his experience and leadership can help his struggling Roma side.

Mourinho has criticised his squad’s attitude after a recent defeat to Juventus.

He said: “When we allowed them back in for 3-2, a team with a strong mentality like Juventus, a strong character. The fear set in. A psychological complex. It’s not a problem for me having 3-2, it’s a problem for them. For my team.

“At the end of the day, when you’re in the [expletive] you get back on your feet and find your character. But there are people in this locker room who are a bit too nice, a bit too weak.”

Ainsley Maitland-Niles is already on loan at Roma and could join the club on a permanent basis in the summer.

Arsenal opted to keep a hold of Xhaka this season, but it’s a decision that has been criticised given his inconsistent time at the club and how he has performed this term.

Xhaka has been sidelined with an injury for the most part, but when he has been fit, he has cost his side on two separate occasions by getting sent off against Manchester City and Liverpool.

The latter occurred last month during the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool as he hastily took out Diogo Jota in the first half.

Mikel Arteta’s men would hold on for a battling 0-0 draw, but Xhaka let his side down once again as he would be unavailable for the return leg that they lost 2-0, narrowly missing out on a place in the final.

Jamie Carragher reckons Xhaka has proven time and time again that he is a “liability” for Arsenal following his dismissal against the Reds.

He said: “The thing with Xhaka is we’ve said before the game that every manager picks him, he is a good character, a good trainer, a good lad, he is a good player, we’ve seen that in a Switzerland shirt and at times in an Arsenal shirt as well.

“But he is a liability in terms of that tonight. We can talk about how great Arsenal were, they were fantastic but more often than not you go down to 10 men at Anfield you don’t just lose the game, you’ll be out the competition.

‘”He’s not even a young lad where you think ok he’ll learn with experience, he’s one of your experienced guys.”
