Arsenal linked with Championship goalkeeper as £20m price tag is touted

Arsenal look to have switched their focus from one Championship goalkeeper to another.

The Gunners were heavily linked with Aaron Ramsdale of Sheffield United. Emirates chief Mikel Arteta is in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer and Ramsdale, despite being relegated with the Blades last season, won plenty of plaudits.

His performances even earned him a call-up to the England squad, originally as a back-up before being brought into Gareth Southgate’s 26-man team following Dean Henderson’s injury-enforced withdrawal.

However, it appears that Arsenal have now shifted their attentions to another stopper within the England camp – Sam Johnstone.

Johnstone suffered the same fate as Ramsdale, with his West Brom side also relegated back to the second tier last term.

Despite that, Johnstone has impressed Gunners’ scouts and the Daily Star reports that a fee of around £20million is being discussed.

That would seem to be enough to coax Albion into selling – especially with Johnstone entering the final year of his current contract.

As for Ramsdale, new Blades’ boss Slavisa Jokanovic made his intentions clear when he was unveiled to the media for the first time on Friday.

Jokanovic spoke about the Gunners’ interest in both Sander Berge and Ramsdale.

Regarding the latter, he said: “I have one of the best ‘keepers in England.

“So I want one of the best ones to be here with us. When I get the chance to sit down (with him), that’s what I will say.

“They are two of my best players. So of course I don’t want to see them go.”
