Arteta recently dropped previous No.1 Bernd Leno for Ramsdale, who kept a clean sheet on his Premier League debut in the win against Norwich City.

Leno had been largely first-choice since he signed from Bayer Leverkusen in 2018, but is now behind Ramsdale in the pecking order.

The 23-year-old’s arrival during the summer transfer window for an initial £24million was a surprise to some Gunners fans, but it is now clear that Arteta was keen on an upgrade in the goalkeeping department.

Having made his bow in a 5-0 Carabao Cup victory over West Brom, Ramsdale will be looking to continue his record of not conceding a goal for the north London club after being selected to start against Burnley on Saturday.

Goal report that the former Sheffield United and Bournemouth stopper is well-liked in the Arsenal camp, with his personality rubbing off on the squad to make him a popular member of the group within a month of signing.

Ramsdale himself was buzzing post-league debut, telling Sky Sports : “I signed to come into the team whenever that might have been.

“I’ve got to carry on working on the training pitch and keep the competition with Bernd [Leno] and hopefully I can stay in the team and keep helping out.”

Ramsdale’s new manager heaped praise upon him following his debut, after explaining the decision to drop Leno.

The Gunners boss added: “I think it was top.”

Asked about the decision once again in his pre-match press conference on Thursday, Arteta affirmed: “It’s the same in every position. We want them to make each other better.

“We are competing against opponents, we are not competing against each other here. We are just trying to bring in players that raise the level of the players who is playing that position, the level of the team, the level of the club and this is the only reason.”

He went on to admit: “Obviously for Bernd, it wasn’t a pleasing communication to tell him he wasn’t playing but he is a top professional and a top person so he should be disappointed.

“But he should support his team-mate like they all do with him every time he has played, and that’s exactly what he has done.”

Leno’s contract at the Emirates expiries in 2023, with the club reportedly keen on selling him in the coming transfer windows in order to recoup a fee after he was put “out in the cold” by Arteta.
