“A lot of pain” – Jamie Carragher tells Mikel Arteta he has to sell three Arsenal players


Jamie Carragher has instructed Mikel Arteta to “get rid” of three underperforming players as he risks finding himself back at square one with Arsenal.

The Gunners were soundly beaten 3-0 by Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday, with the reigning champions scoring three times in the final half an hour having dominated the match throughout.

Arteta was missing the likes of Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe for the clash, and the youngsters’ enthusiasm and energy was sorely lacking as the hosts failed to get to grips with Jurgen Klopp’s man.

Carragher thinks several of the club’s players need to be moved on in order for Arteta to progress the side, with youth needing to the the priority.

“It’s going to take a lot of pain for Arsenal,” Carragher told Sky Sports, having also launched into a scathing attack on club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

“It’s the players, get rid of them. Stick with Arteta and get the young players in the team.

“[Martin] Odegaard has come in and been a revelation, he’s someone you need to make a permanent signing if possible because he’s been fantastic.

“Has [Alexandre] Lacazette ever really been the answer? No. Willian has been a disaster of a signing.

“Nicolas Pepe, it’s not his age or his price tag, really, he’s just not good enough and never will be good enough, so Arsenal need to cut their losses there.”

The Gunners are currently down in 10th in the Premier League table, and host Slavia Parague in their Europa League quarter-final first leg on Thursday evening.
