Why Bakayoko’s second Milan spell hasn’t worked out and what happens next

Tiemoue Bakayoko’s return to AC Milan has not worked out how any party involved hoped that it would, meaning he now faces an uncertain future.

After spending the 2018-19 season at Milan under Gennaro Gattuso on loan, there was talk of Bakayoko even becoming a permanent Rossoneri player. In the end it took until 2021 to see the Frenchman return, this time on a two-year loan, but it could be ended early.

He made just 18 appearances in all competitions for a total of 607 minutes last season, and MilanNews talk about why his return hasn’t gone to plan. First of all, Pioli’s ideas are based around being a pressing machine, which accepts a one-on-one in every situation and which has a completely different pace compared to Gattuso’s style.

When a player fails to adapt to a certain environment and way of playing all his limitations are exposed, and it has become apparent that Bakayoko is simply not compatible with the way this Milan plays.

Together with Chelsea and the his agents, Milan are working to find the best possible solution for everyone involved which generally speaking means leaving and finding another club. The interest of Nottingham Forest and Galatasaray is known, and in the coming days the situation will take shape more clearly.
