“We must not lose what we have created”

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli admitted after the 4-0 defeat against Lazio that he would happily ditch his post-match commitments in order to take the team to Milanello and work on mistakes straight away.

Milan were dismantled by Maurizio Sarri’s side as they scored twice in the first half through Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Mattia Zaccagni before making sure of the three points in the second half when Luis Alberto scored from the spot and Felipe Anderson added a fourth.

The Rossoneri are now without a win in their last five games and they currently sit just one point above Roma who are in fifth place, so a quick turnaround is imperative or a slide could well begin.

Pioli spoke to the reporters who gathered in the press room at the Stadio Olimpico after what was yet another difficult night for his team where the performance was nowhere near the required levels, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

Why did you choose Brahim Diaz again in the frontline?

“It was the best formation to play tonight.”

How do you explain going one-on-one against Lazio?

“Today we didn’t go one-on-one. I’m here because I have to be here. I could go to Milanello right away because we have to work a lot and talk little. We waited for Lazio behind the ball, we made some defensive choices wrong and we didn’t defend well.”

Why did the spirit disappear?

“We played for a long time with more energy. The two weeks were heavy and took away our energy. Milan have always been very light but they have created a lot of expectations. When they can’t meet them, they suffer. I have to stay close to the players and give back the energy that we have lost.”

Happy with the support from the fans?

“The fans are fantastic. We must not lose what we have created. We must have great motivation.”

How is Tomori? When will Maignan return?

“We had a very difficult period. Unfortunately Tomori’s injury happened today and we don’t know how to evaluate. Maignan? He’s improving and we don’t know when he will be able to return.”
