Spalletti calls Milan ‘a very good side’ and references UCL victory over Spurs

Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti has been full of praise for AC Milan and referenced the fact they are the champions and recently knocked Tottenham Hotspur out of the Champions League.

Speaking during his press conference on Saturday ahead of the match which takes place on Sunday (via Milan News), Spalletti would not get drawn into any real discussion about just how dominant his team has been so far this season.

“Everyone has given a little something extra. Let’s remain confident, it’s a triple match that’s worth double for us from now on and with AC Milan it’s a triple match because they are very strong, they won the championship last year, they knocked out Tottenham, they made Kessie leave but they took five or six players to reinforce the squad that was already champions,” Spalletti said.

One of the major talking points coming into the game is that Napoli are going to be without Victor Osimhen who has suffered a muscle injury.

On the absence of the striker that has scored 25 goals this season, Spalletti said: “It’s an absence that weighs heavily, useless to pretend otherwise, but then on the side there is also what Pioli said that I agree with, when Osimhen was missing the team was able to make up for it and everyone gave something extra,” the coach said.

“The difference was also made by players like Cholito [ Giovanni Simeone], he knows what he does, he knows that you don’t only play with your feet but also with your head and he immediately entered the role that he must have and when one is intelligent one gets the same results despite having less chances, but which he knows he must exploit.

“As a way of playing he changes little, Simeone is slower than Osimhen, it’s difficult to find one as fast as him, but he’s good at playing with his back to goal, defending the ball, communicating, we’re fine.”

In terms of who will be replacing Osimhen, Giacomo Raspadori has returned to fitness at the right time but the coach confirmed he will only be on the bench, so Giovanni Simeone looks destined to start.

“He’s [Raspadori] available, but given what happened to Osimhen he’s a very valuable recovery, he starts from the bench because he’s been out but he can play at any time,” Spalletti explained.
