Sky journalist reveals what Milan coaches ‘did not understand’ about Tonali and his turning point

Sky journalist Peppe di Stefano has provided some interesting insight on the changes that took place allowing Sandro Tonali to go from a difficult first season at AC Milan to one of the best midfielders in the league.

Tonali made a dream move from Brescia to his boyhood club on a loan with option to buy deal in the summer of 2020 and he was – by his own admission – seemingly lacking the confidence to execute his abilities in his debut campaign with the Rossoneri, suffering from some growing pains a bit.

However, in his second season with the club he has been nothing short of sensational, becoming the leader of the midfield and a virtual ever-present in the starting line-up at the age of just 21, forcing his way back into the Italian national team too.

Speaking on Carlo Pellegatti’s YouTube channel, journalist Peppe di Stefano – who covers Milan for Sky – commented on Tonali’s journey with the Rossoneri so far.

“Sandro changed something in his head, changed house, habits… he had experienced a particular moment but his goals are clear again. Tonali, I always say, is one of the biggest AC Milan fans I’ve ever met, he knows the history of Milan more than others,” he said (via MilanNews).

“He knows what Inzaghi and Sheva did, he knows the stories related to Milan… he clicked in his head and I understood that at the first friendly match against Nice, he returned at three in the morning but had different eyes and from then on everything changed.

“This year he does everything he does on the pitch with personality and with extreme confidence. Before, however, his legs trembled. The coaches said that he did special things in training, which he does this year in matches. They did not understand why he did them in training and not in matches.”
