SempreMilan’s Player of the Month for September: Veteran comes out on top

Player of the month

By: Isak Möller

AC Milan played five games in the month of September and embarked on October last night as they beat Empoli 3-1 away from home. While he didn’t score in that game, Olivier Giroud stood out last month.

Indeed, based on our player ratings and the average score of each player, Giroud was the most important player for Milan in September. Not exactly surprising, given his stats and the fact that he managed to stay fit with the other strikers injured.

Down below are the top three players in the month of September. Again, it’s based on our player ratings.

3. Theo Hernandez – 6.90

The Frenchman is now one of the best left-backs in the world and even though Fode Ballo-Toure scored last night, his absence was still clear. He played all of the games from start in September and added two assists to his name.

Above all, he has really improved defensively and that really helps Milan, considering that he likes to push forward a lot and thus leaves space (which he can recover with his pace). In short, he’s a very complete and important player for the team.

2. Rafael Leao – 7.00

Had yesterday’s clash been included in the calculations, then he would have been the player of the month for September. However, he still did really well in September with two goals and four assists.

It’s clear that Milan are a different side without him (not always in a negative sense), as he has the ability to change a game from out of nothing. He will be very important in October, just like we saw yesterday.

1. Olivier Giroud – 7.10

At his age, it’s simply stunning that he’s able to perform on such a high level week in and week out. It’s even more remarkable when you consider that he played every game in September from the first minute.

He bagged four goals and one assist during the month, making the most of the chances he got. With Ante Rebic back, he will now get some more competition but above all rest, which is crucial to keep him healthy.
