Sala confirms Milan will provide a preliminary plan for La Maura ‘in a couple of weeks’

A delegation from AC Milan, including owner Gerry Cardinale, had a meeting with the Milan mayor Beppe Sala this morning. The parties discussed the stadium situation and the mayor has now provided an update on the matter.

Cardinale met with the mayor, as well as the Lombardy president, a few weeks back and their intention to evaluate the La Maura area was then confirmed. Today, Cardinale told Sala that Milan intent to move forward with that area for the new stadium.

Speaking to the journalists present after the meeting, as cited by MilanNews, Sala provided an update on the stadium situation. He stated that Milan confirmed their La Maura willingness. He also spoke about the issues with the La Maura area.

“They confirmed their willingness to proceed with La Maura. This is what I asked for, first of all, to confirm that they don’t intend to proceed with the San Siro project. As for La Maura, I reiterated that I take note of their interest, but what is needed is a project.

“They believe that in a couple of weeks, they will be able to bring me a preliminary project so that we can start the formal process.”

On those against the project…

“Asking to disregard those against the project cannot be done, but when I talk about the conditions under which the project could go ahead, there are various themes, such as what does Parco Sud think. If I don’t have a formal interest [preliminary plan], I can’t do more as it stands.

It will pass through the council as well…

“Without a doubt. The problem is not only the council but evidently also Parco Sud and what they think, which is why I asked the team to express a real interest. There is a very important green area there: what will remain? Will it remain a large public park or not? I need a project to start checks with the policies in place.”

On Inter…

“At the moment  they have no other options, I haven’t spoken to them.”

It remains to be seen how the saga will end but it’s clear that Milan need both Sala and also the Lombardy president Fontana on their side. They have the ability to overrule certain constraints and could thus make the project possible.
