AC Milan

Sacchi praises key figures for ‘masterpiece’ season and names most surprising players

Former AC Milan boss Arrigo Sacchi has heaped praise upon the current team for their fantastic Scudetto winning season.

Milan went into their game against Sassuolo at the Mapei Stadium last night knowing that if they avoided defeat they would be crowned champions of Italy, and they couldn’t have done so in a more emphatic manner as Olivier Giroud bagged a brace and Franck Kessie scored to put the game to bed before half-time and secure a 19th Scudetto.

In the long interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Sacchi began by discussing the players that he has been most pleasantly surprised with this season in the Rossoneri squad.

“I say Leao, because he is a boy who has enormous potential, but is not always consistent in his performances. However, when he runs away at speed, he is truly a spectacle,” he said (via MilanNews).

“And then I followed with attention the growth of Tonali. I was also surprised by the two central defenders Kalulu and Tomori. Who knew them? Bravo the manager who has them discovered and good for them.”

Sacchi has been vocally positive about the work that Stefano Pioli has done as head coach this season for managing to implement a style of play that is modern and effective.

“Stefano is a coach I know well. He has had the skill to improve himself from year to year, and at the basis of his growth there is a great humility and a great thirst for knowledge. He was able to give Milan a style of play,” Sacchi said.

Many fans didn’t think that winning the Scudetto was a realistic target but this team have quickly turned those doubters to believers. overcoming the various obstacles that have arisen this season such as injury crises and officiating errors.

Sacchi added: “This is a true masterpiece. The team that has spent the least of all the high-end teams won the title. The managers were able to put innovative ideas on the table, they went to find players that few knew and they were very good.

“Well done Gazidis to keep the accounts in order, well done Maldini and well done Massara to choose the right men for the project they had in mind and that had been shared with the coach. I see great team work, something that in Italy is rarely done, if ever. Congratulations.”
