Photo: Maignan’s ironic response to penalty rule change

Mike Maignan has joked about the new IFAB changes to rules regarding what goalkeepers must do before penalty kicks are taken.

After implementing the rule of having to keep your feet on the goal line, the goalkeeper will now no longer be able to move to try to distract the penalty taker, which further limits what can be done to try and stop the penalty taker.

Maignan published an ironic response to the news on his Twitter profile: “New IFAB rules for penalties in 2026: goalkeepers must have their backs turned when shooting. In the event of a save, a free kick will be called indirect.”
