Morata’s deep connection with Italy could aid Milan’s pursuit

AC Milan have Alvaro Morata high on their list of attacking targets and an assist could come from the player’s love for Italy, a report claims.

La Gazzetta dello Sport report that Milan already occupies a special place in Morata’s heart as it is in the middle of Turin – where Alvaro lived twice as a Juventus player – and Venice which is where he married his Alice six years ago.

It was in Milan that the two met as she lived, worked and studied in the shadow of the Duomo. Morata met her for the first time there thanks to mutual friendships in the fashion world.

Morata has fond memories of Italy in general as well as the city of Milano, as it is where the Spaniard has shown his best and where he felt the most happy and motivated. He scored crucial goals for Juventus in their Scudetto wins, and in the Champions League during that run to the final, plus the winner in the 2016 Coppa Italia final against Milan.

It was after that season that the then-23-year-old convinced Real Madrid to exercise their buy-back but he would end up back with the Bianconeri under Andrea Pirlo, where he amassed 6 goals in 8 Champions League matches.

Another sign of his connection to Italy is shown through the fact Morata and his wife gave their children Italian names: Alessandro, Leonardo, Edoardo (born in Turin) and Bella. He also forged deep friendships with players still in the league such as Roberto Pereyra and Paulo Dybala.

In fact, the Roma forward is the godfather of Bella, Alvaro’s fourth child. In January, after the very delicate moment following the birth (Alice had ended up in intensive care due to some complications), the Argentine and his partner Oriana flew to Madrid to see the little girl at Morata’s home.

In the semi-final of the last European Championships Morata equalised in the 80th minute after Chiesa’s opening goal, but he missed his penalty.

A few months later, Spain qualified for Qatar and the Azzurri were knocked out in the play-off round by North Macedonia, to which Morata said: “The truth is that a World Cup without Italy is less of a World Cup.” For him, being far from Italy makes him feel less like himself.
