AC Milan

MN: Sackings, renewals and a possible title

AC Milan will face Sassuolo on Sunday looking to write another chapter in their illustrious history, and the common theme seems to be that small town in Reggio Emilia.

MilanNews recall how it was towards the back end of the 2019-20 season when the Rossoneri had a turning point. It looked as though Ralf Rangnick was going to come in and be the head of a new era at the club, but after a good run of form and a 2-1 away win against Sassuolo the entire plan was scrapped.

It was leaked at half-time during that game by reliable German and Italian sources that Rangnick and Milan had scrapped any agreement, with Pioli being given a contract extension not long after.

In January 2014 the Mapei Stadium was the venue for the famous game between Sassuolo and Milan that finished 4-3 in favour of the Neroverdi with Domenico Berardi getting all four goals. That would prove to be the final straw for Max Allegri, who was sacked after the game.

On Sunday, Pioli knows that if his team move from the 83 points they currently have to 84 or even 86, they will win the league title for the first time since the 2010-11 season which was when Allegri was in charge.
