Milan have ‘got the best possible goalkeeper’ in Maignan ‘in terms of value for money’

One of the most intriguing sub-plots for AC Milan in the upcoming season will be just how well Mike Maignan gets on as the replacement to Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Rossoneri are looking to build off a season that saw them secure a second-placed finish, their highest since the 2011-12 campaign. This means a return to the Champions League, but that was not enough to convince Donnarumma to pen a new contract as he instead left to join Paris Saint-Germain.

If you fancy a flutter on how the upcoming season may go for Stefano Pioli’s side, sites like W88 have you covered. Of course, how Maignan replaced Donnarumma will have a large say in just how the Rossoneri’s rearguard perform.

Maignan became Milan’s first addition of the summer as the Rossoneri have wrapped up the signing of a new starting goalkeeper with Donnarumma’s contract having expired. On their official website, the Rossoneri confirmed that Maignan will be joining from on 1 July 2021.

The goalkeeper has signed a contract with the Rossoneri until 30 June 2026 and will wear the No.16 shirt, and he has just returned from his extended vacation after representing his country France at the European Championships. During his first press conference at the club he revealed his delight at joining such a big and historic club, pledging to do his best.

One person who certainly approves of the purchase is former goalkeeper Sebastien Frey, his compatriot who also has a rich past in Serie A. He spoke to Tuttosport about Milan’s decision to sign Maignan.

“In terms of value for money, Milan have certainly got the best possible goalkeeper. If Maignan does well in the first few starts, I don’t think the fan will ever regret Donnarumma. It all depends on Mike. The performances, however, will have to hold up to ensure that this applause and this support last over time. A leading goalkeeper always exalts himself,” he said (via MilanLive).

One thing that does seem certain is that the Milan faithful are ready to fully support the 25-year-old in his new adventure, with many feeling betrayed by Donnarumma’s decision to leave the club he repeatedly declared his love for publicly.

“The love story with Donnarumma ended abruptly, with the expiry of the contract. This will ensure that Maignan will be greeted with applause and support from the entire Milanese milieu,” Frey added.
