Man City linked with surprise move for defender as Pep Guardiola plots bargain raid

Antonee Robinson has become a shock summer target for Manchester City.

The American defender was relegated from the Premier League last season with Fulham. Robinson, 23, featured heavily for the Cottagers in his what was first taste of top flight football.

He made 28 league appearances, 24 of them starts, in a campaign that saw Fulham relegated to the Championship after just one season.

Now, reports claim that Pep Guardiola is looking into the possibility of recruiting Robinson.

The champions are looking to add a number of players to their squad as they look to build on a superb season that saw them finish 12 points clear of neighbours Man United in second.

Other top flight sides are said to also be in the mix for Robinson. He was signed by Fulham for a modest £2million last summer but it’s estimated that their asking price will be closer to the £10million mark – still a relative bargain fee for a side like City.

He joined from Wigan Athletic but came through the ranks at Everton.

In early 2020, he famously saw a move to Italian giants AC Milan fall through. A deal was done between the Rossoneri and the Latics, with a £6m fee agreed.

But the move broke down when, following a medical examination, it was discovered that the US international had an irregular heart rhythm.

Speaking last year about his disappointment over the episode, Robinson admitted he was left in tears.

He said: “I didn’t understand what the doctors said since they spoke in Italian, but then they asked me if I had ever had heart problems before.

“Then they sent me to a hospital where I made further checks and finally, after four to five hours, they took me to the office.

“I thought I would finally sign the contract, and instead there they informed me that they would no longer take me because of a heart defect found during medical visits.

“It was a shock to me, I was torn, and I couldn’t hold back the tears.

“We were not talking about a knee ailment, but about a situation that leaves you puzzled.”

Thankfully, the scare doesn’t appear to have affected Robinson too much and a potential move to City would give him the chance to right the wrongs of the collapsed move just 18 months ago.
