Maignan ended wait of over 17 years for Milan goalkeepers with save on Depay

Mike Maignan immediately demonstrated his qualities in his first game as the official new number one goalkeeper for France, and he ended a long wait for AC Milan too.

The Rossoneri goalkeeper made his fourth start for the French national time after three previous appearances in the UEFA Nations League, and he kept a clean sheet thanks in large part to a penalty save on Memphis Depay during the 4-0 win over the Netherlands.

As Giuseppe Pastore reports on his Twitter profile, the last Milan goalkeeper to save a penalty for his national team was Nelson Dida all the way back in 2005. The Brazilian stopped Borgetti’s spot kick during a match against Mexico in the Confederations Cup.

With Hugo Lloris having now retired and with Maignan now the starter hopefully for years to come, it shouldn’t be that long a wait for the next penalty stop to be made by a Milan keeper.
