GdS: Magnificent Maignan rises to the occasion


After AC Milan’s win in the derby against Inter, the headlines were obviously dominated by Olivier Giroud’s match-winning brace, but the Rossoneri must also thank Mike Maignan.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) recalls how in the first half the French goalkeeper made some fundamental saved that kept Milan in the match. It was his first Milanese derby as he was out in the first leg due to injury and he responded to a great occasion with a great performance.

Milan lost Gianluigi Donnarumma in the summer, but a few months later and his name has been forgotten. Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara pulled off a brilliant operation with Lille as they paid €13m plus €2m in bonuses to sign Maignan after a season in which he won Ligue 1.

According to the report, the Rossoneri’s No.16 is the best in Serie A with a save percentage of 81%. Of course he has tremendous talent, but Stefano Pioli who has repeatedly defined him as a player ‘eager to learn more and more’, with an inarguable professionalism and a new role as a leader.
