Ex-Milan coach describes Maldini as a ‘champion’ on the pitch and now off it

Former AC Milan coach Arrigo Sacchi has described Rossoneri technical director Paolo Maldini as a champion when he was a player and now as a director.

Speaking during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Milan News) today, Arrigo Sacchi showed how happy he is with the current state of Milan and accredited much of the good work to Paolo Maldini.

“Paolo Maldini was a champion on the field and he is a champion also as a manager. Leadership, competence: this is his style.”

He was then quick to say that the club must not fall into the same trap as the Italian national team who won EURO 2020 and then did not appear to build on the success. They then failed to qualify for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

“He has taken young people to Milan and now we have to be careful of the success trap, which has also caged the Italian national team,” he said.

“I don’t know what will happen, I hope the Milanese will be able to overcome the flattery. In the meantime, we can say honour to Maldini, but also to Massara and to Pioli who was the creator of a less tactical and more strategic style.”

Maldini and his colleagues have received a lot of praise since Milan clinched their first Scudetto since 2011.

It is widely agreed that the project in place at Milan did not intend for the Scudetto to be won so early but now the club have a headstart on their next goal which must be going deep in the Champions League.
