CorSera: Three-man defence no longer works

AC Milan’s struggles in 2023 continued on Saturday night as they were not just beaten by Udinese but they lost rather comfortably too in what was a poor defensive display.

A switch to a three-man defence after the torrid run of form that started in January seemed to have fixed a leaky rearguard after wins against Torino, Spurs, Monza and Atalanta without conceding, but now the Rossoneri have conceded six goals in their last three league games against Fiorentina, Salernitana and Udinese.

According to Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews), the feeling is that the three-man defence no longer works and therefore after the international break it is possible that Stefano Pioli decides to return to the 4-2-3-1.

It is well known that it is his favourite system as it brought the Scudetto win and the nine clean sheets in the last 11 games of last season showed that it could produce solidity.
